How does it work?

1
Sign-up
Join us by completing a brief survey about your sleep habits! This initial screening helps us identify which studies you may be eligible for.
2
Intake
When a new study opens, we’ll contact individuals who meet the initial criteria. If you’re a match, we’ll schedule an intake online or in our labs.
3
Sleep Research
The study officially begins now! You’ll be supported and monitored throughout. If anything comes up, don’t hesitate to reach out—we’re here to help.
4
Insights
After the study, you'll receive a detailed sleep report. Some studies may also offer financial compensation, depending on their nature.

How can you participate?

You can register for the study through the link below. If you meet the requirements and we have a participation spot, we will contact you.

In this study initiated by the University of Amsterdam, we examine how subtle and non-arousing sounds interact with natural sleep processes. The goal of this study is to evaluate how these sounds influence slow oscillations via closed-loop auditory stimulation and to assess their impact on sleep quality.

Participation involves 2 overnight stays at the UvA Sleep and Memory Lab. During these nights, we will monitor your sleep using high-density polysomnography, a standard and widely used method for measuring brain activity and other physiological signals during sleep.

During specific phases of sleep, subtle and non-arousing sounds may be presented. These are carefully timed and are not intended to wake you up.

You will receive a total of 70 euros as compensation for your participation.

If interested in participation, please follow this link to fill out the screening survey.

Frequently asked questions

How often can I participate?

You’re welcome to participate as many times as you like! However, you can’t join the same project more than once. Some projects include different types of trials, so to make sure you don’t miss out on any opportunities, we recommend signing up as a DeepSleep Pioneer. We keep track of which projects you’ve already taken part in and will notify you when a new trial is a match!

Are there any side effects from the stimulation?

Nope! The stimulation we use is completely non-invasive and has no known side effects. All the equipment used in our experiments is designed with safety and comfort in mind. If you ever experience any unusual or lasting effects after participating, please contact the researcher involved in your study and your GP right away.

What if I can’t fall asleep?

It happens — and it’s totally okay! If you find that you’re unable to fall asleep during a study, you’re free to stop the session at any time. If your sleep troubles are caused by specific circumstances (like stress, personal issues, or technical problems), we’ll be happy to invite you back to try again another time, if you’d like.

How is the compensation determined?

Compensation depends on the number of nights you’re asked to sleep for a given trial. If you’re traveling from farther away, feel free to reach out to us about possible travel reimbursements. Not every trial includes compensation or travel coverage, so if you’re unsure, just ask!

Do you have questions?

If you have any questions about the study or are simply curious about sleep research in general, don’t hesitate to reach out: we’re happy to help!

You can send your questions or requests to the email address below. When you do, please mention that you’re contacting us regarding the sleep study.

If you’d rather speak directly with one of the researchers involved in a specific study, feel free to leave your contact details: we’ll get in touch with you as soon as possible.
